Initial Account Setup
FileZilla is open source FTP software for Windows, Mac or Linux – to you and me that means ‘Free’! You can download it from http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client.
On Windows, double click the downloaded .exe file. For Mac, double click to unzip, and drag the application to the Applications folder. Once it’s installed, open the program.
On the main screen, Select File – Site Manager then New Site (and give the Site a Name, I’ve called mine PSS – Paul Files, I have others on this list too)
Enter a Host name of ftp.photoshopservices.com
Change the Logon Type to Normal
Enter the UserName given to you by PSS (mine here is Paul)
Enter the Password supplied by PSS (it will display as asterisks)
Click on the Advanced Tab and put your Username (as entered on the initial Tab) into Default remote directory with a ‘/’ in front (you can also enter a local folder to start from, here mine is /Volumes/Data)
If you then click Okay it will be saved
To Connect and Transfer
Just below the File command there’s a drop down option (small icon of three computers linked) there) that will now open Site Manager which will list the new connection
Click on the new connection name and it will connect to the PSS FTP Server. The left side is your computer; the right the FTP Server
Right click in the area that says Empty Directory Listing and one option is to Create Directory – do this before uploading so the images can be kept organised
Enter a name for the images (shoot name, for example) – it’s helpful if it includes the number of images that are expected to upload as a cross check for us. Double click the new directory to enter it. Then simply drag the files you want transferred from the left pane to the right one and they will start to transfer; the list of transfers is in the bottom of the screen and as they upload they will appear in the right hand section, along with tabs that will show successful and failed transfers as below:
This is generally better than sending one large zip file as if there are any connection issues transfer can resume from where it got to.
